Starts: 10:00
Ends: 11:30

A future for your church

Free online workshop run by Heritage Trust Network and Historic Churches Scotland aimed at groups thinking about taking ownership of their local church, or already managing a reduncant church.  This workshop will present three case studies from Fife, followed by informal discussion.

This event will be broadcast on Zoom Meeting, with live transcript from Otter.ai, if you will have any difficulties with this or any other access issues, please contact Sarah Pearce on sarah.pearce@heritagetrustnetwork.org.uk for assistance. Book via Eventbrite

Parts of the event will be recorded, but no element of audience participation will be shared publicly at any time.

Heritage Trust Network and Historic Churches Scotland are joining forces to host the next event in this series for any group contemplating the future of their church building. At this event we will hear how future uses and financial models have been explored for three churches in Fife.

Deborah Kent, Project Officer at Fife Historic Buildings Trust will present on the recent study that was completed in 2023. Deborah will share the steps taken, community engagement activities that were carried out and the lessons learned from the study. This presentation will only be given live and no recording will be made – so be sure to attend on the day!

We will then hear from the community at St Monans Auld Kirk who took part in the study, to hear their experiences and recommendations to others. This case study will be recorded and shared with attendees afterwards.

Following this, we will have a Q&A session with the speakers followed by an informal discussion with attendees.

Dig: Thrumster Community Excavation ...

18 April 2024

In 2022, the Yarrows Heritage Trust used money committed by a local windfarm trust for a community project to search for the remains of a “lost” towerhouse, Thurster Tower. There are numerous historical references to this tower, but it was probably destroyed in the early 17th century. Its exact whereabouts are unknown, although local tradition locates it to a field just north of Ulbster.

In April 2023 AOC Archaeology led a preliminary community excavation of a structure in this field, involving community volunteers and local schoolchildren. The excavation was led by Andy Heald of AOC who has extensive knowledge of Caithness. This superficial excavation uncovered part of the structure revealing a complex multi-period building with an earlier more solid structure underpinning later additions. This did not have the appearance of the looked-for towerhouse but did look as if it would provide the opportunity to investigate a Caithnesian vernacular building.

Their aim this year is to return to the site with AOC Archaeology in order to do a longer and more extensive excavation of the structure, with ample opportunity for community involvement and post-ex analysis.

To get involved and for more details, register your interest by emailing heritage@yarrowsheritagetrust.co.uk.

All welcome, no experience required!
